A Reflective and Relaxing Holy Week Staycation at Century Park Hotel Manila

For a predominantly Catholic country like the Philippines, a reflective observance of the Holy Week traditions such as Visita Iglesia, is an important practice. On the other hand, the younger contemporary generation of Filipinos prefer relaxation and traveling during this holiday.

Although we don’t practice the Catholic traditions as an evangelical Christian couple, we do observe the Holy Week with reflections on the life of Jesus Christ in particular His suffering on the cross with emphasis on His resurrection – Easter – to highlight the empty cross and tomb symbolizing His victory over death and giving the gift of Eternal Life through Christ.

With the Holy Week coming to a close this Black Saturday, we hope you had a solemn one as well.

On the lighter side, we a s couple choose not to travel far this Holy Week. We simply decided to have a simple, reflective, and relaxing city staycation at Century Park Hotel here in Manila.

We checked-in Wednesday and there was not much people. Well, not until the next day – Holy Thursday, when couples and families who think like us, checked-in droves, perhaps until Easter Sunday.

We got a cozy Deluxe Room with 1-big bed from among their 500-rooms in the hotel. Alternatively, you can get a Delux Room with Twin Bed if you’re coming in as a family.

Our room at the 16 floor offered a good “City View” of Manila on a hot summer day. (I’m just glad we’re relaxing inside a well air-conditioned room, escaping from the afternoon heat of our residence. 🙂 ) Guests can also choose a ‘Pool View’ or the ‘Manila Bay’ view and a ‘smoking’ or ‘non-smoking’ room. Of course, we chose the latter.

Honestly, this is our first time to stay overnight at Century Park Hotel which was launched as far back as 1976. At more than 40 years old, we thought this would be an old hotel so we didn’t set our expectations too high.

But we were wrong.

To our pleasant surprise, the hotel had spacious rooms and a mix of classic and modern interiors. We then learned that the floor we stayed in was one of the floors which were recently renovated as part of their overall hotel improvement. There were also some ongoing renovations at the hotel lobby.

Our Deluxe Room had a very comfy bed and sheets with an elegant lounge chair by the side. There was also a clear glass wall between the bath tub and the main room. Aesthetically, it made the room visually more spacious; aside from the convenience of watching the cable television while dipping at the bath tub. 🙂

There was also a corner workstation for some blogging backlogs we worked on in between reflections and relaxations.

We just had to mention that there is also a physical Bible in their drawers perfect for some couple / personal quiet time this Holy Week. As digital natives, we are used to our Bibles as a mobile app from our smartphones. It just felt like going back to the paper-based Bible felt more reflection-appropriate at this time and season.

As for the other hotel amenities – they have 2 huge pools – one is a lap pool while the other is for general use.

It is noteworthy to mention that this is one of the only 2, among the hotels we know of in the Philippines, which is heated.

Add to that the heated jacuzzi right beside the outdoor pools, which is very good for one’s health. I’m not sure though if we can consider that as a 3rd pool? 🙂

So those afraid of the cold pool waters, will not have much of an issue with these heated pools. 🙂

For foodies, the hotel’s 3 major restaurants greet you at the main lobby entrance with The Lounge, Century Tsukiji Japanese restaurant, and Cafe at the Park.

The last one is where guests’ buffet breakfast is served daily. Cafe in the Park has a wide array of breakfast buffet menu to choose from from breads, international and Filipino-inspired viands, fruits, yogurt, and more!
